Abelands Barn was constructed in 1859 as part of Abelands Farm which is situated across the road to the south. Here, animal feed was stored for the Winter in the main barn, whilst cows sheltered in the smaller annex in the courtyard, hence, aptly named the "cowshed".
From around 1950 the cows were kept south of the main road to make daily milking easier allowing the main barn to be used to store hay and straw and the old cow shed became a cart lodge. By the 1980 the barns became redundant.
The Barn was then converted into a family home in 1987 and has been tastefully restored whilst remaining in keeping with it's history and retaining many of its original features.
Abelands Barn has teamed up with renowned local photographer, Gerry Gavigan - his landcsape and documentary work can be found in many of the rooms at the barn, and framed prints are available for sale.
Gerry Gavigan has travelled to more than 40 different countries during the course of a long career as a first assistant Director, working on films as diverse as Star Wars, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Tomb Raider and eight of the last nine Bond movies, and most recently, the epic Troy.
In contrast to the high pressure world of big budget films, his great love is for still photography and in recent years he has concentrated increasingly on landscape pictures of Britain, although his work exhibited is from the many exotic places he has visited whilst shooting films.
We are delighted and honoured to be able to display Gerry's work at Abelands Barn. His prints are available to buy, prices starting from £75 unframed. Or maybe you have a favourite landscape you would like him to capture. For more information on Gerry's work, please contact us and we can give you his contact details.
